On 17 January 2013, Nicolas Tiangaye, a candidate nominated by the rebels and the government’s political opposition, was appointed as the new Prime Minister of CAR. President Bozize confirmed this appointment. The formation of the government is awaited.
Following the approval by the UN in New York, a second wave of critical staff returned to Bangui on 23 January. Subject to a favorable security situation, all essential staff will return to Bangui on 27 January, and families and dependents on 2 February.
On 18 January, WFP resumed its food distributions in CAR. The first site to resume was in Zemio camp, situated in the south-eastern part of the country. WFP, UNHCR and UNFPA Country Directors and Representatives visited Zemio Camp to assess the situation in the area and were present during the food distribution. A journalist accompanied this mission. By 22 January, WFP distributed 80 mt to approximately 5,000 Congolese refugees in the camp.
WFP in partnership with main remaining food security actors is preparing to conduct a Rapid Food Security Assessment (RFSA) in Bangui and conflict-affected areas to identify possible food security gaps.
