Bukavu, 23 January 2013 (caritasdev.cd): The humanitarian community continues to relieve thousands of newly displaced in the province of Sud Kivu. In fact, following clashes between the militia of Raya Mutomboki and FARDC across the border area between territories of Shabunda, Mwenga and Walungu, more than 5,800 households were forced to leave their villages to seek refuge in communities around Mulamba. The humanitarian community, including Caritas, is preparing its response.
Humanitarian needs of the displaced are expressed in terms of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), NFI , health care (medicine stocks being exhausted in health centers in the middle) but also food and education.
Humanitarian actors are already organizing to coordinate a response with regard to the resources currently available. Thus, IRC / RRMP will take care of water and sanitation. MSF has visited the area to support health facilities and make health care free base. It will also deploy two mobile clinics.
Caritas Bukavu plans to intervene in the shelter and non-food items. In addition, the World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that the need for a distribution may occur in two or three weeks. In addition, Caritas Bukavu proposes to provide emergency food rations for one or two weeks, thanks to funds received from the Confederation Caritas Internationalis, Caritas Congo via Asbl, through its Emergency Call EA37. It has also distributed notebooks and pens to welcome displaced students in schools in the middle and when they return.
