IOM and partner agencies have completed a two-day operation to relocate 967 displaced families (3,132 people) sheltering in three Goma schools to a displacement camp.

The evacuation of Ushindi, Neema and Nazareen schools and the families’ move to the Mugunga 1 site will allow the schools to reopen for the first time since the crisis triggered by the M23 invasion of Goma in eastern DRC in November 2012.

The operation, requested by the Congolese government’s National Commission for Refugees (CNR), was preceded by an awareness raising campaign notifying the families that in future aid would be delivered to the displacement camps of Mugunga I, Mugunga III and Bulengo, and not to the schools.

IOM coordinated the move, in close collaboration with partner agencies. The Congolese Civil Protection agency registered the families. The Norwegian Refugee Council and the Lutheran World Federation provided transport. Diakonie provided a non-food item (NFI) relief kit to each family on arrival in the camp. Each family was also was allocated space on which to build a hut.
