OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES
Protection
Protection services are provided to refugees living in urban communities and include physical safety, special protection for children against exploitation and abuse, assistance for persons with specific needs, legal protection, psychosocial support, and SGBV prevention and response.
Strengthening of targeted services and assistance for persons with specific needs is a priority.
Registration
A total of 35,411 refugees from the Kasai region of DRC are biometrically registered in the Province of Lunda Norte.
Out of the 35,411 refugees, 24,262 received food assistance. Out of those, 13,515 (56%) are in Lóvua Settlement while 10,747 (44%) in urban communities scattered in different districts of Lunda Norte.
The operational priority is the coming physical verification exercise of the urban refugee population soon to be relocated to Lóvua settlement.
Education
5,182 children had access to education, out of which 53 per cent were girls and 47 per cent were boys.
The programme is divided by age groups and focus on Portuguese language and basic education.
Health
- Primary health services, vaccination and nutrition screening for children under 5 years old and pregnant women were prioritised.
Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV)
- SGBV and SEA awareness raising activities continue, namely strengthening existing specialised services for SGBV survivors; enhancing community participation in SGBV prevention and response; improving awareness through continuous outreach sessions; and capacity building of and advocacy with SGBV and PSEA key actors.
Food and Non Food Items distribution
General Food Distribution (GFD) was implemented by WFP for 2,801 households’ part of the urban refugee population at the new transit centre.
A distribution plan of essential amenities including food, household items, and other priority services remains a necessary component of assistance for the urban population.
Shelter and Site planning
- A new refugee transit site has been allocated to UNHCR and partners by the Government of Angola. It will serve both for General Food Distribution and future relocations to Lóvua. The centre is being cleared and some renovation works will be done on the existing buildings.
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
- WASH facilities will be built in the new transit centre in Dundo.
