Fighting between the March 23rd Movement (M23) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) resulted in large population movements in North Kivu at the end of May. Handicap International is taking emergency action to provide shelter for these refugees.
In North Kivu, some 5,000 people were displaced towards Sotraki and Buhimba following clashes between the FARDC and the M23 in May. To cope with this new influx of refugees, the humanitarian community decided to build transitional shelters to accommodate families fleeing the fighting.
Handicap International’s emergency teams responded extremely quickly to this crisis by setting up two large tents to provide shelter for refugees within an extremely short period of time. The team is in the process of setting up raise additional tents. Handicap International is also supplying mobility aids to Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium, which has set up a mobile clinic on the site.
