Last week UNHCR saw a significant increase of the number of arrivals from the DRC which culminated over the weekend with more than 1,000 arrivals. They are currently hosted in two transit centers, one in Cishemere( Cibitoke), another one in Kajaga ( Bujumbura), but many other refugees have been hosted by Burundian communities in the villages of the Province of Cibitoke. The Burundian Red Cross is identifying them so that they can be transferred to the Cishemere transit center (TC) prior to their transfer to Kavumu refugee camp in the Eastern Province of Cankuzo.
Last year, 3, 489 asylum seekers arrived from the DRC during the first eight months of the year. This year the figure for new arrivals is over 6,000 for the same period.
